Prioritising Mental Health in an Ageing Population

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day (10th October) aims to increase awareness of mental health issues and at Barking Mad, we want to shine a light on mental health issues amongst our ageing population.

As we age, it’s common to experience a range of mental health issues including social isolation, depression, and anxiety. Loneliness and social isolation are common in the elderly due to retirement, the loss of a spouse or physical limitations. According to the ONS, in 2021, 3.3 million people, aged 65 years and over were living alone in England and Wales. These factors can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety, making it crucial to find ways to improve the quality of life for our elderly population.

Dogs and Mental Heath

At Barking Mad Dog Care, we believe the impact that pets, especially dogs, can have on mental wellbeing is remarkable. Our dog host community plays a vital role in enhancing the lives of older individuals, offering companionship, joy, and emotional support.

Research highlights the positive effects that pets can have on mental health. Dogs are known for their ability to provide unconditional love, reduce stress, and enhance overall mood. For those struggling with loneliness, the companionship of a dog can be transformative, offering not only emotional support but also opportunities for social interaction and physical activity.

Barking Mad Host Community

At Barking Mad Dog Care, we recognise the unique needs of older individuals and the potential for dogs to make a significant difference in their lives. Here are just some of the ways that our dog sitting hosts benefit from spending time with dogs:

A perfect match

Our service connects hosts with carefully selected dogs, ensuring a match that meets both the pet’s and the hosts’ needs. This personalised approach helps create a bond that is both meaningful and beneficial, providing companionship and reducing feelings of loneliness.

Increased physical activity

Those suffering from loneliness and social isolation can benefit from going on dog walks. Not only is physical exercise good for our emotional wellbeing but it also offers the opportunity to meet like-minded dog lovers and dog owners.

Social interaction

Through our dog host community, our hosts often find themselves more engaged with their local communities. The presence of a dog can spark conversations, create connections with other dog owners, and encourage social interaction.

Support

The unconditional love of a dog can offer a profound sense of comfort and security. Dogs provide emotional support that helps alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression, offering a calming presence during challenging times. Plus, hosts get 24/7 support from the Barking Mad branch owner. Hosts aren’t just hosts; they are family to us.
